services and what you can expect
We currently offer individual, couples, and group therapy services for children, adolescents and adults both in person and virtually.
Therapy for adults
Individual therapy with adults is a very powerful thing. Although it may look different from client to client based on their needs and goals, individual therapy is typically scheduled as weekly, 50 minute sessions that are used to focus on the individual needs of that particular client.
In individual therapy, you can expect your therapist to support you in better understanding the experiences you are having and to provide feedback, insights, reasearch, education, or other tools that may be helpful to you in working towards your therapeutic goals.
Individual therapy is a wonderful choice for most clients, whether you have been in therapy before or if this is your first time. It provides you a space that most of us don’t have in our lives to solely focus on yourself and the individual needs you have!
Therapy for adolescents
Under the law in California, adolescents who are 12 years old or older and who are able to understand what they are entering into are able to consent to their own therapy. This is not always necessary, and it is always best to have parents on board if possible, but because of their age, adolescents tend to have more autonomy in their therapy than young children.
As an teen in therpay, you can expect to feel as though you have a safe space that is all for you. It is also important that parents and caregivers know that there is an open invitation for collaboration when it is safe and helpful to do so.
Individual therapy with adolescents is typically scheduled similarly to therapy with adults (one 50 minute session per week), however your therapist will work with you to make sure you have a schedule that fits your needs!
therapy for young children
Therapy with children often looks pretty different than with adults! Although it may be scheduled similarly (one 50 minute session per week), the content of the session tends to look more like play. Because of the developmental stages that young children are at, play is often times their best form of communication and processing. it is their way of learning about and understanding the world.
As a parent or caregiver, you can expect your child’s therapist to use evidence based play therapy and art therapy to support your child in processing trauma, learning new skills, and incorporating coping skills. Sometimes it might look like just play, but that is because play is the medium that all children understand!
Since the nature of therapy with children relies heavily on play, in person sessions are preferred. However, each child is different and sometimes telehealth is sufficient, so your therapist will collaborate with you more on how to best support your child.
Couples therapy
Relationships can be a lot to navigate and learning the skills necessary for a happy, healthy relationship can be challenging. Whether the relationship is new and trying to find its path forward, or the couple is just ready the have time dedicated to supporting their relationship and working through their challenges, couples therapy can be a great option.
Similarly to individual therapy, couples sessions are typically scheduled once a week, but they range from 50 minute sessions- 80 minute sessions based on the needs of the couple. Another difference from individual therapy is that the couple together is seen as the client. This means that the focus and the goals of therapy are revolved around what the needs of the couple are, and not of the needs of the individual.
It is important in couples therapy that there is a space where the couple feels as though they can both be supported and heard in what they want and need from the relationship. By focussing on improving communication and conflict management skills, recognizing each person’s physiology, and identifying emotions that are present in the relationship, a couple can then build toward better connection and higher levels of intimacy.
Group Therapy
Group therapy is a wonderful type of therapy where a group of people get to engage in their therapy together, support each other, learn from each other, and build a sense of community that may be hard to find typically.
We believe that safety is the most important factor in facilitating group therapy. When there is safety, group therapy can be an incredibly powerful experience for the members and can offer unique opportunities for growth. Rarely in life are there opportunities to learn from, provide support to, and to process your own experiences with others who have had similar experiences as you. In addition to this, it can also present an affordable alternative to individual therapy and therefor may be more accessible to some.
Every group is a little bit different in scheduling and format, so if there is a group you are interested in, we will be happy to provide more specific information!
